Dan and John Cronin awarded Community Spirit Award

BROTHERS HONOURED FOR THEIR DEDICATION TO CORK STROKE SUPPORT CHARITY

Dan and John Cronin awarded a Cork International Hotel Community Spirit Award

The Chairman and Treasurer of Cork Stroke Support are the latest winners of a Cork International Hotel Community Spirit Award.  John and Dan Cronin were honoured for their dedication to the charity which is now supporting more than 200 members and provides a five day service.

Cork Stroke Support was formed in 2010 by volunteer health care professionals in collaboration with stroke survivors and families.  The vision of the group was to reduce the impact of stroke and improve the quality of life of survivors and families.  They offer support and help to ease the transition from hospital to home.

The Cronin family were introduced to the group after their father Sean suffered a stroke in 2017.  After he passed away Dan and John ran a successful Golf Classic to raise funds for the charity and they were asked to join the committee.

Since then, the group has secured a premises and the Cork Stroke Support Centre was officially opened in Blackrock in 2021.  The centre’s offering has grown to include a number of services such as a physiotherapy and nurse led stroke day programme, counselling, information sessions, gym sessions, exercise classes, art and music classes along with members outings.  A dedicated rehabilitation gym was officially opened last year providing physiotherapy led exercises.

Dan and John are now the Chairman and the Treasurer respectively of Cork Stroke Support.  They work tirelessly alongside a small group of volunteers to raise much needed funds in order to maintain and increase the services being offered to people from around Cork.

General Manager of the Cork International Hotel, Eoghan Murphy said; “The effects of a stroke can be extremely upsetting for survivors and their families and the services provided by Cork Stroke Support go a long way to improving the quality of life for so many people.  Dan and John experienced firsthand the kindness and compassion of the group and have committed their time and energy to ensure other families receive the same treatment.  They are extremely worthy winners of the latest Community Spirit Award and we’re thrilled to be able to honour them in this way.”

The judging panel for the Community Spirit Awards are made up of a mixture of representatives from the public and private sector within the community.
